DESCRIPTION:The Engineering of Research by Horizontal and Vertical Integra
 tionIn an era where the electrification of everything demands new material
 s at rapid speed\, conventional research methods are no longer sufficient.
  This talk explores how the integration of cutting-edge technologies is re
 volutionizing scientific discovery\, particularly in battery research and 
 catalysis. Prof. Helge Stein will present a transformative approach throu
 gh Materials Acceleration Platforms (MAPs)\, which combine combinatorial s
 ynthesis\, high-throughput characterization\, automatic analysis\, and mac
 hine learning. MAPs leverage horizontal integration by unifying diverse me
 thods—experimentation\, simulations\, and data analytics—i.e. vertical
  integration by connecting stages from material design to device applicati
 on. The horizontal integration framework FINALES exemplifies this paradig
 m\, enabling decentralized control over distributed experiments and simula
 tions across Europe. It demonstrates the power of integrating electrolyte 
 formulation with device performance prediction. Complementing this\, the H
 ELAO framework orchestrates lab automation and bench-scale atomic data lin
 eage management\, allowing expedited experimentation that accelerates know
 ledge generation. These innovations are pivotal in addressing global chal
 lenges\, showcasing how engineered research can accelerate research to opt
 imize materials and processes for batteries and catalysis. By bridging res
 earch modalities and scales\, MAPs represent a significant leap forward in
  scientific discovery\, offering solutions to pressing environmental issue
